It’s all social

There is so much happening on the social media front, and information is available to anyone who inquires. It is important in today’s times to have some sort of presence on social media, but just because the options seem endless, does not mean that you have to subscribe to all that is available. Choosing your social medium platform carefully is important and should be carefully considered depending upon your intended audience and objective.

I would like to take a few moments to categorize the most prominent social media platforms that are popular here within the United States.

FACEBOOK & TWITTER 

This social media platform is great for promotions and copy-heavy information that is immediately shareable. Information shared on these mediums usually revolve around current events and social commentary.

INSTAGRAM & PINTEREST

A more personal social media platform in nature, uploads are typically limited to pictorial content and short video clips. Content shared by users on these platforms tend to be creative and less text-heavy. Additionally, the user has more creative control over how they can organize and display their content. Instagram in particular is huge for personal branding, along with the next two that I mention below.

GOOGLE+ & LINKEDIN

These social media platforms are where professional users share information about organizations and businesses (internally). Users’ networks are more exclusive and concentrated per industry. Google+ is more tech-oriented, while LinkedIn revolves specifically around career opportunities, networking and displaying industry expertise or soliciting it from thought leaders.

You may have already had an idea as to what the differences are between the various social media platforms that currently exist. However, it is important to choose your social media channel carefully, or you run the risk of having your message become ‘lost in translation‘ to your target audience. No Bueno.

Hot or Not?

Creating buzz is very important. How does anyone know about your company, brand, product or anything if you don’t create excitement around learning more about your offer?

There are many ways to drum up excitement about your latest project. You could:

Crowdsource

If you are at a loss for how to generate more exposure – especially if you are on a tight budget – then this method works in drumming up promotion with little cost.

Create a viral marketing campaign

This is the digital form of ‘word-of-mouth’ marketing. The idea is that one or several individuals may see a marketing campaign and then pass it along to their friends, and so the cycle continues. At some point, there will seem to be a spike in media attention with the marketing campaign displayed everywhere — hence the term ‘viral’.

Blogging helps too. Creating buzz for project can be fun. The key, however, is to determine which buzz drumming strategy you should use that is strategic and makes sense for your brand.

Go hard, or go home

I really liked our discussion topic on mobile marketing, mobile apps, advergaming, and short films. A mouthful, I know! But, these are really cutting-edge marketing strategies that are quickly approaching. Some of these tactics may have already touched you, without you realizing. And videos are everything these days, aren’t they?

In the current digital landscape companies/brands infuse their website content video content, not only to make their websites stimulating and visually appealing, but it serves as a way to reach consumers. GoPro has mastered the art of streaming media, which is essential in capturing viewers interest in the emerging media field. With streaming media, consumers can listen to other customers provide their testimonials, and view the world through their eyes. In all actuality, the GoPro videos serve as a testimonial in their own right.

Reach me online

Advertisements are a part of life. They are — at least for the time being unavoidable. I actually do not have a problem with ads reaching me online, as I have learned about great companies and products this way.

I was researching for a paper online on a website one day and BAM, a pre-roll ad pops up and steals my attention away. A pre-roll ad is one that scrolls across whatever content that you might be looking at and automatically displays their content (that brought you to the site):

Normally, I would have been annoyed, but these ads are so unique. The video started playing and it featured a cool ad — for a gym of all things. I was so intrigued by the ad, that I ended up clicking on the link to the website and actually filled out a form for a membership representative to contact me. I immediately regretted it as soon as I filled it out, and silently started to panic, but I thought, ‘hey, maybe they won’t really contact me. After all, I already have a gym membership elsewhere — I was just curious.

They called me. And the convo got real awkward once the rep realized I was not in the market for a new membership. But I will totally join once I am ready, or maybe I’ll find somewhere else to sweat in style Who knows? Anyway, I digress. There are so many ways for companies to reach us these days: Email marketing, banner ads, Google Adwords, SEO, pop-ups, and mobile text ads. I will mention more of these in detail in my other posts, but we as consumers are so accessible now of days.

Next time a company hits you with an ad, take a second before you swipe them away and observe how they are trying to reach you.

Lurking on the web…

So, I have been on a little hiatus — unintended, in all honesty. I expected to post on this blog at least once per week…and well, all I can say is that I had the ‘best laid plans‘, but it did not quite shape out the way that I expected. Anyway, I am all set to push out a marathon of blogs, so here goes!

The graphics online are so cool these days. There are so many websites that I find myself on for hours and hours. I thought about why some websites are more interesting than others and through learning about the different components that go into making a website appealing, I landed on the practice of UX Design, also known as User Experience Design.

UX Design is all about making your website look pretty in a nutshell. Making the components of your page attractive and understandable to the viewer so that they know where to go, click, hover over, scroll or stay put on a particular page of your site.

Other than taking special care to consider UX practices from the front-end and back-end, a cool website must be mobile responsive or adaptive.

Be engaging.

Be informative, a.k.a. have a purpose.

I think I did. But anyway, you get the point. Also, if you are a retail website, you have got to make your e-commerce initiatives count. That is, your website program should consist of flash sales, subscription models, and some type of loyalty program.

As I look at my younger siblings and family members, it is amazing to see how much the digital landscape has shaped their experiences. My younger sister practically grew up with YouTube and Tumblr and used such platforms to upload videos of her musical talents. I often wonder what my path would have looked like had I had access to such tools growing up. I probably would have had gone down a very different career path – with marketing still somewhere there in the mix – but c’est la vie.

In today’s times, multicultural marketing is a must. The United States is changing right before our eyes, and professoinal marketers and communicators must reflect that. This notion is exciting to me as I love traveling and love learning about different cultures. Sit me in front of a marathon of Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations or Parts Unknown or Andrew Zimmern’s Bizarre Foods, and I’m done for the day.

There is no where else that I would rather be…other than traveling to said places that they feature. However, as a marketer, this practice is extremely important as ‘one size fits all’ advertising just does not cut it anymore — plus, its boring to be frank.

I chose to focus on marketing to African Americans in this post, and learned some interesting facts. This multicultural group spends over  $900 billion a year, and guess which social media platform they tend to flock to the most? You guessed it — (just assuming) Twitter!
